Harvesting Shishito Peppers: A Seasonal Highlight from Hidden Harvest’s Small Farmers Program

Coachella Valley, CA — May 2026

This spring, Hidden Harvest is proud to highlight the harvest of shishito peppers through our Small Farmers Program—one of the many ways we are bringing fresh, locally grown produce to neighbors in need across the Coachella Valley.

Shishito peppers are a delicate, thin-skinned variety known for their mild flavor and occasional surprising heat. Typically harvested while still green, these peppers are picked by hand to preserve their quality and prevent damage to the plant. Their short shelf life and sensitivity to heat make timing critical, especially in desert growing conditions.

For local small farmers, harvesting shishito peppers requires careful attention and frequent picking. The plants produce continuously throughout the season, meaning farmers return to the fields multiple times each week to harvest peppers at peak freshness. This hands-on process not only supports quality but also ensures a steady supply of fresh produce.

Through Hidden Harvest’s Small Farmers Program, we are able to purchase these peppers directly from local growers, supporting their sustainability while increasing access to nutritious food in our community. Once harvested, the peppers are quickly cooled and prepared for distribution—helping preserve freshness from the field to the families we serve.

Shishito peppers are distributed free of charge at our Senior Markets and through our Community Partner Program, giving clients the opportunity to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce that may otherwise be difficult to access.

At Hidden Harvest, every harvest tells a story—of local agriculture, community connection, and the shared effort to ensure no food goes to waste.
