In addition to rescuing surplus produce, Hidden Harvest partners with local small farmers by purchasing their seasonal harvests—bringing greater variety, freshness, and nutrition to our food distributions. This collaboration not only strengthens our programs, but also supports the sustainability of small-scale farms and our broader agricultural community.
We support small farmers in three meaningful ways. First, we provide hands-on assistance to help beginning growers get off the ground—whether that means offering guidance on planting decisions, helping navigate regulatory requirements, or connecting them with trusted local resources. Second, we purchase the fresh, seasonal produce we need for our food distributions, giving farmers a reliable, local buyer they can count on. And third, for the crops we don’t buy, we help farmers find additional markets to sell their surplus—so they can make the most of their harvest and keep their operations thriving. Because sometimes, the little guys just need a little help, too

STANDING WITH SMALL FARMERS DURING THE SUMMER HEAT— Summer hasn’t officially arrived, but the heat is already creeping into the Coachella Valley. While many residents escape the rising temperatures, our Small Farmers are preparing for something else entirely—the next growing season .
Summer is one of the most challenging times for agriculture in our region. Harvests may slow, but the work never does. Farmers are clearing fields, repairing irrigation lines, laying weed-control tarps, and preparing to plant in August—when temperatures can soar above 110 degrees. Their work is year-round, and their commitment to nourishing our community never stops.
At Hidden Harvest, we stand with these farmers because their labor yields more than just food—it sustains our mission. The produce they grow reaches thousands of low-income seniors, families, and community members who rely on us for fresh, nutritious food. In a region where the need for free access to food grows every day, every melon, squash, or tomato grown and shared makes a difference.
But summer also brings a challenge: many seasonal donors head out of town, and with them, essential support. That’s why we’re inviting you to help us grow year-round support for the small farmers who keep our mission alive.
Your gift today brings stability to their work —even in the toughest months—and ensures that fresh, healthy food reaches those who need it most.
Thank you for standing with us this summer. Whether you donate or help spread the word, your support means the world to us
