The Small Farmers Pilot Program

A new initiative (conceived in the heat of Summer 2021) that really solves two problems - it provides much needed additional produce and variety for our Senior Markets while putting money in the pockets of small (not in stature!!) farmers who farm five acres of less.

Where there’s a will there’s a way

Our original concept has adapted over time, still harvesting produce from fields when farmers have finished their harvest and the opportunity presents itself, but farmers are leaving less and less behind for a variety of reasons.

We continue to rescue hundreds of thousands of pounds of produce from local packing houses but still, there is more demand for this healthy produce than we can provide during some times in the year.

More than a transaction its a relationship

The Small Farmers Pilot Project has teamed up with three local farmers to start with and asked them to grow specific crops for our Senior Markets (and our other clients as well) and we will pay market value for them as they are harvested.

These farmers are knowledgeable growers but they struggle to know what varieties the market wants and at what price point.

Stories from the field.

Another Win-Win! Our goal is to help these farmers become more successful both as farmers and in the business side of things, putting money in their pockets.

Produce is then distributed to those that need it via our Senior Markets and through our regular distribution channels — always free of charge. Win-win again.

Benjamin Masapila and his family were the first family farm to participate in the Small Farmers Pilot Program. Their successful harvest provided 9 tons of cauliflower and broccoli for Hidden Harvest’s Senior Markets.
